whoopee. apple recently upgraded the processors on the entire macbook pro line, so finally we'll all have a machine that is just as fast as the other "dull little boxes" that other computer manufacturers roll out.
same speed, better quality. what else can one ask for!
however i do have a theory. this is either a
i) pre-planned marketing stunt by apple - which was planned ever since they introduced the macbook pro line.
ii) a clever sales stunt to generate more income as apple offers an even faster processor upgrade for just US$300. this is obviously targeted towards users who simply must have the latest and greatest.
iii) stalling tactic while apple address some production issues.
Personally, I think it's a combination of (i) and (ii), as they both work cooperatively to either foster a sense of goodwill with the mac community (we're getting more for FREE!) and increase the bottom-line by taking advantage of power users.
As a side note, I think that the CPUs present in the MBP are socketed as opposed to them being soldered on.
Whatever it is, I'm getting mine end of feb. Whee!
